Australian Doctor Reports Being Cancer-Free A Year After Self-Treating His 'Incurable' Brain Tumor
According to the Daily Mail, the survival rate for this type of cancer is extremely low, with the majority of victims dying within a year after diagnosis.
Professor Scolyer was on vacation in Poland when he became ill, suffering from migraines and seizures. He subsequently had a brain scan and was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of grade 4 brain cancer that is 'incurable'. According to the Daily Mail, the survival rate for this type of cancer is extremely low, with the majority of victims dying within a year after diagnosis.
What did the doctor claim?
Professor Richard Scolyer posted on X to commemorate a year of being 'cancer-free', "I underwent a brain MRI scan last Thursday to check for recurrent glioblastoma (and/or treatment problems). I learned yesterday that there is still no sign of recurrence. "I couldn't be happier!"
"Unfortunately for me, I have one of the worst types of brain cancer that has no cure. I'm not comfortable with that; I want to do something that will give me a fighting chance against this malignancy," Professor Richard told ABC News last year.
What challenges did the doctor face?
The 57-year-old professor then attempted to treat the brain cancer on his own. He received experimental therapy based on his own study on melanoma, a kind of cancer that begins in the skin.

He was able to become cancer-free thanks to his colleague and friend Professor Georgina Long, co-director of the Melanoma Institute Australia. Professor Scolyer received a mix of medications prior to surgery. The goal was to train his body's immune system to target cancer cells, according to the site.
"To be honest, I was more nervous than I have been for any previous scan," he stated to the BBC.
