Did You Know? In This Country, A Pack Of Condoms Costs More Than A Brand New Television
They say that instead of going to jail, it is better to buy contraception in the country of Venezuela by spending money.
There are several ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Be it a condom or a contraceptive, preventing pregnancies is not a difficult task nowadays. But looks like everyone in the world doesn't have that kind of freedom.
In the country of Venezuela, abortion is illegal. So, naturally, the prices of contraceptives are also pretty high. For a pack of condoms, people in Venezuela spend up to Rs 60,000. But the price doesn't stop them. Despite such a price, people crowd outside the shop to buy them.
That is not the only problem. Due to strict abortion laws in the country, it is extremely difficult to even find contraceptives and condoms in pharmacies and supermarkets, making the prices much higher.
The prices of these condoms and contraceptives are even higher in the black markets. The prices are double or triple the actual prices. So, basically one would have to sell a kidney to buy a pack of condoms. Literally!
According to the UN's State of World Population Report 2015, Venezuela is the country with the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Latin America and these rates have remained steady despite notable changes in other South and Central American countries.
Not just that, with condoms difficult to find and nearly impossible to afford, HIV rates¡ªas well as those of other STIs¡ªhave increased and will continue to do so.
Some laws need to change in this country.
