Thane: Couple Throws Acid On Helpless Stray Dog Who Loses Both Front Legs And Ears

The accused, Qayum Khan and his wife Afreen, were upset as the dog used to sit and sleep near their house in Thane's Kasara. Earlier this week, Khan and his wife allegedly threw acid at the dog, severely injuring it.

Meet Ashar, an activist of PETA India, said that he contacted senior officials of Thane (rural) police when he learned about the incident. The dog was then treated by Sharan for Animals NGO in Nashik. The canine was also adopted by Sharanya Shetty, the founder of the NGO.
Ashar told The Times of India, "PETA India commends the efforts of the Thane (rural) police and thanks them for their clear message that cruelty of animals will not be tolerated." He said that instances of animal cruelty must be brought to the notice of the police to reduce them and to ensure that justice is served.

Animal Cruelty
The accused couple was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960 and, Maharashtra Police Act, 1951.

Unfortunately, this is not a lone incident. Every day, several such instances are reported from different parts of the country, and it is both heart-breaking and painful to read through them.
Last year, a dog was brutally assaulted in Mumbai by security guards when for seeking shelter inside a residential complex. The dog, named Lucky, breathed its last when treatment was being provided to it.
It's one thing to not like dogs - or any other animal - but it is quite another to brutally beat and kill one just because you're annoyed by their presence. It is not hard to understand that even they are living beings and have as much the right to life as we do; and if this does seem hard, then indifference would actually be the lesser of two evils.
