Dhanteras also known as Dhantrayodashi is one of the most important and auspicious festivals of India which is celebrated by Hindus across the country with great grandeur and enthusiasm. It is the beginning of the five-day festive season which is celebrated on the Trayodashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik Month. On this day people worship Goddess Laxmi and Lord Kuber.

It is believed that on this day, Goddess Laxmi emerged from the churning of the ocean with an urn of wealth and prosperity in her hand. On this day, as per Hindu tradition, people also light yama deep outside their house so that their house is protected from all kinds of evil eyes and negative energy.

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day-long festival of Diwali. It is believed that Lord Kuber, Goddess Laxmi and Lord Dhanvantari, a God of Ayurveda came out of the ocean during Samudra Manthan. Therefore, on this day all three deities are worshipped.

Worship on Dhanteras before Diwali has special significance. Goddess Laxmi, Lord Ganesh and Lord Kuber are worshipped on this day. Dhanteras means to increase and multiply your wealth thirteen times. Lord Dhanvantari was born on this day. He appeared during the churning of the ocean with an urn of nectar and Ayurveda and for this reason, Lord Dhanvantari is also called the father of Ayurveda.

'Dhan' means wealth and 'Teras' means thirteen that is why it is known as Dhanteras. Dhanteras has special significance for businessmen as it is believed that Laxmi Puja brings prosperity, happiness and success on this day.

This day is also considered auspicious for buying land, a car, investing and starting a new business. In villages across the country, people worship domestic animals as They believe that their livelihood is based on these animals, so they should be worshipped as a source of income. In South India, cows are considered to be an incarnation of Goddess Laxmi and are worshipped on this day.

1. On the day of Dhanteras people wake up early in the morning and start cleaning and decorating their homes.

2. After cleaning people light up their homes and office with diyas, lights, rangoli, and flowers.

3. The entire family performs Lakshmi puja in the evening and offers diyas with desi ghee, flowers, kumkum, and akshat to invite Goddess inside the house to bless the occupants. People also worship Lord Kuber on this day.

4. Many types of delicious sweets and savouries are prepared on this day to offer Goddess Lakshmi.

5. In Maharashtra, there is a unique custom of making ¡®Naivedyam¡¯ with powdered dry coriander seeds and jaggery which is offered to the Goddess and later distributed among family members.
