'I'll take this to my grave': Narayana Murthy stands firm on 70-hour workweek stance

NR Narayana Murthy, Co-founder and Former Chairman of Infosys, recently spoke at length at the CNBC Global Leadership Summit. He discussed the need for more management hires in the government and even went viral for singing Elvis Presley's 'Can't Help Falling in Love.' But, of course, one of his most talked-about moments had to be his much-debated advice to today's youth: the infamous (or famous, depending on your perspective) 70-hour workweek.

At the CNBC Global Leadership Summit, NR Narayana Murthy made it clear that his views on work ethic remain unchanged, stating, "I am sorry, I have not changed my view. I will take this with me to my grave," when asked about his stance on the 70-hour workweek.

He unequivocally stated, "I don't believe in work-life balance."

The Infosys co-founder expressed his disappointment over India's transition from a six-day to a five-day workweek back in 1986, emphasising that the country's growth requires dedication and sacrifice, not relaxation.

Murthy pointed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi¡¯s gruelling 100-hour workweeks as a model of commitment, stating, "When PM Modi is working that hard, the only way to show our appreciation for what's happening around us is by working just as hard."

He also referenced the post-WWII rebuilding efforts in Germany and Japan, suggesting that India should adopt a similar approach to national development. "This is what they did to rebuild their countries," he noted.

Drawing from his own experiences, the 78-year-old entrepreneur shared how he maintained a rigorous work schedule throughout his career, routinely working 14-hour days, six and a half days a week.

He would start his day at 6:30 am and finish around 8:40 pm. "I'm proud of it," he added, underscoring his belief that hard work is essential to success.

For Murthy, the message is clear: "We need to work hard in this country. There is no substitute for hard work. Even if you are the most intelligent guy, you have to work hard."
