What may seem like a very normal thing to do for young people¡ªposting a dance video online¡ªmay have you jailed in Iran. The same thing happened with this couple in Iran, who just posted a cute dancing video online. Here's what happened.
Iranian couple jailed for posting a dance video online
A young Iranian couple in their 20s who shared a video of themselves dancing on the street was given a 10-year prison sentence. The dup is seen dancing at Tehran's Azadi Tower in the video. Iranian law forbids women from dancing, much less doing so with a guy.
In spite of Iran's rigorous regulations, the woman could also be seen in the video without a headscarf. According to DailyMail, the couple, who have been identified as Astiyazh Haghighi, 21, and her boyfriend, Amir Mohammad Ahmadi, 22, were found guilty of "promoting corruption and prostitution, collaborating against national security, and propaganda against the establishment."
Many people hailed the couple's video as a representation of the freedom that the protest movement wanted after Mhasa Amini, 22, died while being held by the police last year. The couple was detained by the authorities even though they made no reference to the ongoing protests and unrest in Iran in their dance video.

Before placing Astiyazh Haghighi under custody, authorities also raided her home. In addition to the jail sentence, the authorities have imposed a two-year travel and social media ban on the couple. The two are also not permitted to leave the nation.

The unrest in Iran began in September, with various protests in the country calling for the overthrow of the country's regime, which rose to power following the 1979 revolution. Riots erupted across the country following the untimely death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.
Amini was arrested in Tehran on suspicion of violating a morality rule that requires all women in the country to cover their hair with a hijab or other headscarf. Amini allegedly set herself on fire, and her death sparked broader protests across the country. Protests against the government are held to express citizens' dissatisfaction with the current state of inequality, corruption, unemployment, and poverty.
To quell the protests, government officials are handing out harsh sentences to those who are apprehended for their involvement in the unrest. Since the protests began last year, over 14,000 people have been arrested.
