Jamia Tops The List of Central Universities In Government Rankings, Beating AMU & JNU
Jamia Millia Islamia bags the first spot among all central universities in the country in rankings released by the ministry of education.
Delhi¡¯s Jamia Millia Islamia was the hotbed of turmoil at the beginning of the year. However, it still managed to beat prestigious universities like, JNU and AMU to bag the first spot among all central universities in the country in rankings released by the ministry of education. The university won with a score of 90%.
In the ¡®Grading/scoring of performance of central universities¡¯ by the ministry, Jamia scored of 90%, compared to 83% of Rajiv Gandhi University of Arunachal Pradesh, 82% of JNU and 78% of Aligarh Muslim University.
The scoring of the universities is based on an evaluation on key parameters fixed under an MoU in 2019-20.
All the universities were required to sign a tripartite MoU with MHRD and UGC for continuous evaluation, according to TOI.
¡®Jamia was the first university in 2017 to sign this MoU and present itself for performance evaluation,¡¯ read a statement by the university.
The parameters of the evaluation included annual student intake in UG, PG, PhD and MPhil and student diversity, which included percentage of female students, students from other states and foreign students.

Other parameters included quality of faculty, student-teacher ratio, teacher vacancy, visiting faculty, etc. The universities were also assessed on the number of students placed through campus interviews, and number of students who qualified in NET, GATE, etc.
¡®Jamia also did well on other parameters of governance, finance, national and international rankings like NIRF, NAAC and QS as well as co-curricular and extracurricular activities,¡¯ the statement said.
Najma Akhtar, vice chancellor of the university said that the achievement was significant because of the challenging time the university had gone through in the recent past. She said that the achievement was a result of ¡°high-quality teaching, relevant and focused research of highest quality and improved perception of the university.¡±

Another parameter of judgement focused on financial powers. According to TOI, ¡®Universities were being encouraged to ensure a gradual annual increase in user charges/fees charged for various courses and facilities and were expected to strictly follow the General Financial Rules, 2017 issued by department of expenditure, ministry of finance, and Government of India in all their financial transactions, including procurement of goods and services¡¯.
Even after being the cynosure of controversies and protests, with disruptions in studies, Jamia managed to stay at the top.
