Jharkhand: Students Tie Teachers To A Tree, Beat Them Over Poor Marks In Exams
The students claimed that the teacher gave them low marks in practical tests, resulting in their failing the exams.
Police said on Tuesday that students allegedly attacked a mathematics teacher and a clerk at a residential school in Jharkhand's Dumka district after tying them to a tree for allegedly giving poor scores on a Class 9 practical test.
The incident occurred on Monday at a government-run Scheduled Tribe Residential School in the Gopikandar police station area of the district.
As many as 11 students of the school out of 32 got Grade 'DD' (Double D), which is considered equivalent to fail, in the class-9 examination, which was declared by the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) on Saturday, the police said.

"No FIR has been lodged in the case, as school management did not give any written complaint about the incident. After verification of the incident, I asked the school authorities to file a complaint. Still, it refused to say that it might spoil the students' careers," Gopikandar police station in charge Nityanand Bhokta told the Press Trust of India.
The teacher was identified as Suman Kumar, while the clerk was Soneram Chaure, police said. They also did not give any written complaint to the police, Mr. Bhokta said.
We received info on incident & held talks with all teachers. When we reached there, students said that they were given very less marks in practicals & they didn't receive adequate response from their teachers: Surendra Hebram, Block Education Extension Officer, Gopikandar, Dumka pic.twitter.com/4n7rDa5ANU

Gopikandar block development officer (BDO) Anant Jha, who also went to the school with Mr. Bhokta for the investigation, said there were 200 students in the residential school, and the majority of the students were involved in the incident.
Students called us on the pretext of holding a meeting & said their results were spoiled. It happened because their practical marks were not included in results. That was to be done by the headmaster. So we couldn't have taken any step in this regard: Kumar Suman, Teacher pic.twitter.com/7HPX8Sfh3R

"The victim's teacher was earlier the school's headmaster, but later, he was removed for unknown reasons. It might be a case of rivalry among teachers. To maintain law and order in the school, classes for classes 9 and 10 have been suspended for two days, and students were sent back to their homes," he said.
The students claimed that the teacher gave them low marks in practical tests, resulting in their failing the exams. The clerk was allegedly responsible for posting the grades to the Jharkhand Academic Council's site.
"The school management failed to show the marks of practical examinations and the date on which the marks were uploaded online. It is still unclear whether the students failed in theory papers or practicals. Prima facie, it seems, the students took action only on a rumor," he said.
