After Officials Stop Child Marriage, Parents Blame Kids For 'Being In Love'

Thanks to a team of child line officials, a child marriage was stopped from taking place in village, Moradabad district on Tuesday. The officials, accompanied by the local police stopped the marriage of two children.

After the intervention, the families of the two children alleged that they were in love and had an affair. They reportedly said that the two children had threatened to kill themselves if the families did not allow them to marry.

Child line incharge, Moradabad, Shradha Sharma said they had received a tip-off about a child marriage taking place in Majhola area. The team rushed to the area to stop the wedding.

According to TOI, officials found that the boy was 19 years old and the girl was 15 years old, and both were school dropouts.

The families were reportedly counselled by the officials and made aware of the ramifications of child marriage. The police were also directed to keep a close watch on the two families. The two families were also asked by officials to write an assurance, promising that they would not marry off their children before they turn adults.

Rakesh Kumar, Majhola SHO reportedly said, "As of now, no case has been registered. However, strict warnings have been given to families. Police teams will also keep a watch. The marriage has been called off for now."

Earlier in April, a 16-year-old girl from North Delhi¡¯s Burari, was forcefully married to a man in neighbouring Haryana¡¯s Sonepat district but timely intervention by an NGO put a stop to it.

The NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan had initially received the information and they had informed the police of the same. The police then went to the spot and arrested seven persons in the case, including the girl¡¯s father and the groom.

Hindustan Times reported the NGO's senior manager Manish Sharma saying that he got a tip-off on WhatsApp about a girl, a student of class X in a government-run school in Burari, being taken away by her father to get married in Haryana amid the lockdown.

Sharma passed on the information to his NGO¡¯s functionary in Haryana who alerted the state police and other authorities. The NGO also stated that the anti-human trafficking unit of Haryana also took cognizance of the incident as informed the police for rescuing the minor.

The police, on being informed, swung into action and the phone of the concerned girl¡¯s father was placed on surveillance on April 26 by the officers of the district¡¯s cyber crime unit. The officers located it to Gohana village in Sonepat district. The police discovered that the minor was forcibly married to a 27-year-old man in the night on Akshaya Tritya.

Subsequently, the girl was rescued by the police and was produced before the local Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
