The U.S. is one of the worst-hit countries by the coronavirus pandemic. The country is presently home to 215,300 active cases and over 5,000 people have already lost their lives due to the deadly virus.
The worst news it that the country is expected to have a spike in the death rate in the upcoming weeks. So, in order to address one part of the problem, the Pentagon has decided to give away 100,000 military-style body bags for potential civilian use.
According to Bloomberg, the Federal Emergency Management Agency sent in a request for 100,000 body bags (also known as Human Remains Pouches) and through the inter-agency group they used, they were directed to the Defence Department.
The report says that the Pentagon has a stockpile of 50,000 body bags and will be looking to buy more of them.
This is a small initiative that the Pentagon has taken up after its highly-praised deployment of two hospital ships to New York and Los Angeles to help reduce the pressure on the medical facilities which are overwhelmed by COVID-19.
The report also suggests that the country is expected to have a death toll of around 200,000 people due to the coronavirus outbreak and US President Donald Trump said, "This is going to be a painful two weeks,¡± Trump said at the White House on Tuesday. Our strength will be tested, our endurance will be tried.¡±
The coronavirus has claimed over 47,249 deaths worldwide with 936,237 infected people fighting the virus.
