'A Gas Chamber': Netizens React To India's Brutal Heatwave As People Struggle To Find Relief
While India is no stranger to heatwaves, especially in May and June, summer came knocking on our doors early this year with high temperatures settling in from March itself. Taking to social media, this is what people have to say about the heatwave.
Indian states witnessed the hottest March in 122 years, with the national capital recording its hottest day on April 28 with a temperature of 43.5 degrees Celsius. India's weather department has issued a severe heatwave warning as millions of people struggle to find relief.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-4C over most parts of north-western and central India this week is expected, with "no large change thereafter".
While India is no stranger to heatwaves, especially in May and June, summer came knocking on our doors early this year with high temperatures settling in from March itself.
Even the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, known for its pleasant weather, was a victim of the scorching heatwave this year.

If the highest temperature in an area or location hits or is above 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, or 30 degrees Celsius in hilly areas, it is considered to be under the impact of a heatwave. The highest temperature criterion for the coastal zones is 37 degrees.
As per IMD, a heatwave is when the maximum difference in temperature is between 4.5 and 6 degrees. So, if a region's usual temperature is 40 degrees and the actual documented temperature is 45 degrees, the area is experiencing a heatwave.
