An auction is set to feature a valuable item: the Titanic's plan utilized during the 1912 inquiry regarding the vessel's tragic sinking. It is estimated to fetch a sum exceeding ?200,000.
The British Board of Trade specifically commissioned the 33ft (10m) diagram to support the 36-day investigation into the incident.
The plan was utilized by experts and witnesses to determine the root cause of the disaster and included original chalk markings detailing the events.
The massive diagram was mounted on linen and held such significance to the inquiry that it was displayed in the official hearing room for constant reference by witnesses.
White Star Line architects created a hand-drawn diagram of the Titanic for the 1912 British inquiry a mere few weeks following the ship's sinking.
This drawing permitted the 96 witnesses who testified to point out different areas of the vessel with a pointer.
Once the inquiry determined that the "excessive speed" was responsible for the ship's demise, the distinctive plan was returned to White Star.
A private collector paid ?220,000 for the blueprint in 2011, which set a new record for Titanic-related memorabilia worldwide.
It has been on display to the general public in Belfast for the past ten years, and many people have seen it.
According to auctioneer Andrew Aldridge of Henry Aldridge & Son, this item is a rare and historically significant component of the Titanic's narrative, complete with period images in situ. As a result, this auction lot may provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to obtain it.
"It is a magnificent and commanding piece, historically and visually, and it eclipses anything we have seen on the market for Titanic in terms of size. It has been on exhibition in Titanic Belfast since 2012 and has been viewed and enjoyed by several million people during this time; most importantly, it has undergone an extensive process of archival stabilization."
Henry Aldridge and Son Ltd. in Devizes, Wiltshire, will auction off the blueprint on April 22.
