There are plenty of jobs in India, it is creating a skilled workforce that poses a challenge, reads a report. If low wages is one accompanying issue, low productivity is not far behind on that list. Enter the gig economy.
What's a gig economy?
A gig economy is defined as a labour market made up of freelancers, consultants and contractors working part-time and remote jobs, and not full-time employees. According to the Economic Times, the gig economy is multiplying and India boasts a hefty 7 million gig workers at present. This number could grow to 25 million by 2030.
So how will a gig workforce fix the 'problem' of low productivity? With first-time employment and skill development opportunities including training programs. But the gig economy is not only changing the work-life landscape in India, it's happening across the globe. There have been reported cases of people working additional remote jobs on top of their regular 9-5 to boost their income while enjoying the perks that come with a full-time position. This is where this story comes in.
How did one techie manage to double his income working 2 remote jobs?
A US-based managed to pull off the feat of secretly working two remote jobs boosting his income. With student loans amounting to $118,000 (Rs 98 lakh), and an income not more than $85,000 (Rs 70 lakh) a year, the unnamed techie, it seems, had to think of options fast.
According to a Business Insider report, the Arizona-based security risk professional doubled his annual income to over $170,000 (Rs 1 crore, roughly) and reduced his loan amount by Rs 42 lakh. He sought inspiration from a YouTube video that told him exactly what he needed to know. "I immediately knew that I could do this," he told a paper.
He gave himself two years to double his income and half the loan amount. He found his second remote job on Linkedin. "Within two weeks, I applied, had two interviews, and was offered the position," he shared.
What tips did he share?
"You can use your sick time for many reasons ¨C didn¡¯t get enough rest, mental health day, doctor¡¯s appointment, etc.,¡± he said. ¡°You don¡¯t need to justify to anyone why you are using your sick days," he explained. He also recommended using calendars and schedules to avoid any conflicts or overlaps.
Moonlighting and working multiple jobs have triggered many a debate, many a time in India. But with the ever-evolving work-life landscape in India, especially given the unmatched growth of the digital medium, this push and pull between working a traditional full-time job or juggling a few remote jobs will remain.
