Airbnb Is Sponsoring An Expedition To Antarctica For 5 People, Last Date To Apply Just A Couple Of Weeks Away

Every place on Earth is turning into trash, thanks to the amount of plastic that has been generated over the years. Even Antarctica, the place that is uninhabited by humans, is being affected by the pollution and garbage.

If you are someone who feels strongly about the plastic and have a desire to travel to the coldest continent on the planet, Airbnb is presenting you the perfect opportunity.

It is on the lookout for five applicants to travel to Antarctica and assist in a unique research project as 'citizen scientists'.

It has teamed up with Ocean Conservancy to create the Antarctic Sabbatical. After a decent amount of training five people will get to join environmental scientist Kirstie Jones-Williams for a one-month expedition. The five people will ¡®study whether the microplastics that saturate our oceans have made their way to Antarctica.¡¯

Jones-Williams reportedly said, ¡°Most people think of Antarctica as a pristine and isolated continent, but recent evidence shows that even the most remote locations are affected by plastic pollution. This expedition will help us understand the pathways of microplastics to remote regions such as Antarctica and comes at a critical time to highlight our responsibility to protect our natural world.¡±

If you are thinking any prior experience is needed for this, then you are in luck, because it's not.

According to Airbnb's website:

The five chosen citizen scientists will first attend immersion training in Punta Arenas, Chile, for two weeks, where they will get a crash course on glaciology, field sampling and proper lab procedures.

When they arrive on Antarctica, the volunteers will assist with collecting snow samples to be studied. The samples will be analyzed in order to see how far into the continent plastic pollution has reached.

Alongside their scientific work, the five will have the opportunity to visit landmarks on the continent such as the Drake Icefall and Elephant¡¯s Head, and will also travel to the South Pole.

So, for those who love to travel to remote destinations, this is as remote as it can get - temperature as low as -92 degrees Celsius and going to a frozen desert, which literally has no human population.

But one should know that this will be no vacation, in the press release, Jones-Williams said that ¡®applicants should be prepared for hard, scientific work, emphasizing that Antarctica - while a spectacular and rare destination - is a harsh landscape.¡¯

¡°I am looking for passionate individuals who are excited to partake in the work and return home eager to share our findings with the world,¡± she said.
