A man tried to avoid going to jail buy committing another crime - trying to fake his death. For all the times Grammar Nazis have been criticised for being too critical, one might realize their importance now, because the man who attempted to fake his death got caught because of a spelling error. He must wish he knew a proofreader.

Long Island criminal defendant, 25-year-old Robert Berger of Huntington, New York, made his lawyer submit a phony death certificate, but the error in it might establish the ¡®dead¡¯ for a fraud.

Robert now faces up to four years in prison if convicted in the alleged scheme, in addition to pending sentences for earlier guilty pleas to charges of possession of a stolen Lexus and attempted grand larceny of a truck ¡ª the punishment he was looking to avoid, reports AP.

¡°It will never cease to amaze me the lengths some people will go to avoid being held accountable on criminal charges,¡± AP quoted Nassau County District Attorney, Madeline Singas, as saying.

Berger pleaded not guilty to a single count of offering a false instrument for filing, a judge set bail at $1 but ordered Berger back to jail because of his underlying cases. Robert¡¯s next court date is July 29.

The lawyer who submitted the suspicious death certificate claims that he had nothing to do with the alleged shenanigans and was used as a pawn.

Berger was scheduled to be sentenced to a year in jail last October, on the theft-related charges. He fled the state then and tried to convince his then-lawyer, prosecutors and the judge that he had killed himself. According to the prosecutors, he allegedly used his fiance to pass along a bogus death certificate.

Berger¡¯s ¡®death certificate¡¯ at first glance looks like an official document issued by the New Jersey Department of Health, Vital Statistics and Registry, but there was one small (read: big) problem: Registry was spelled ¡°Regsitry¡¯. Allegedly, there were also inconsistencies in the font type and size that raised suspicions.

Prosecutors said that the actual New Jersey Department of Health, Vital Statistics and Registry confirmed that Berger¡¯s death certificate was a fake.

Berger was alive, and he was arrested in suburban Philadelphia on various charges, including allegations that he provided a false identity to law enforcement and stole from a Catholic college. He was sentenced in January to up to a year in jail, according to Pennsylvania court records.

Guess not everyone is as good a fraud as Mike Ross from Suits, but then even he got caught.
