Just when you think you've seen it all, along comes a video of a headless fish enjoying a casual swim in a pool of water. That's what this viral video shows. But is it a "zombie" fish, a freak of nature, or is there solid science behind it?
You're probably thinking how is something like that even possible? Well, one straight answer is "It's nature, be prepared to be amazed." In a video recently shared by the popular page 'Nature is Amazing,' a headless fish can be seen enjoying a casual swim in a pond as a curious bystander tries to interact with it while recording a video. Strangely enough, it even pauses in between as if responding to the man's touch and then thinking nothing of it, swims away in another direction. But how is this even possible?
Well, one explanation is that its neural circuit is still intact as are its reflexes. As per various sources, once a fish is left without a mouth or head, its spinal cord continues to retain oxygen. Sadly, this doesn't mean the fish is alive, it's just reflexive activity which phases out after some time.
How did the internet react?
The tweet was shared on August 27, and has raked in 342.8k views, more than 2.5k likes and comments to match. Here's what people had to say:
A headless fish can still swim due to the presence of neural circuits and reflexes within its spinal cord that control basic motor functions independently of the brain. In many fish, the spinal cord contains nerve pathways responsible for generating rhythmic swimming movements.¡ pic.twitter.com/RTs0MLXmvD

?Context: this is a Suckermouth Catfish that lost all his mouth. It appears that it has just barely retained its guills and eyes, suggesting that the brain is ok (just behind the eyes). pic.twitter.com/4gU5jTdB8D
