Video: Denied Probation, Man Jumps Over Bench And Attacks Judge In Las Vegas Courtroom
A man leaps over a courtroom bench and onto the judge in a widely shared video of the hearing in Las Vegas.
In a video that went viral recently, a felon was seen attacking the judge in a Las Vegas courtroom after being denied probation. According to various reports, he jumped over a bench in the courtroom and hit the judge. Here's what went on.
Who was attacked?
A Nevada judge was attacked by Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, according to reports.
What happened?
At his sentencing hearing, a man in a Las Vegas courthouse climbed over the bench and attacked the judge when she denied him probation, as seen in the shocking video.
Judge Mary Kay Holthus was sentencing 30-year-old Deobra Redden, a three-time criminal, in Clark County District Court following his conviction for attempted violence causing significant bodily harm, according to KLAS.
Redden's lawyer requested that Holthus sentence his client to probation at around eleven, but Holthus had other plans for the offender.
Video obtained by the site shows Redden suddenly running up to the bench, throwing himself over with his arms spread, and tackling the judge to the ground.
A state flag for Nevada and an American flag crashed in the chaos. In the turmoil that preceded Redden yelled obscenities at Holthus, and the clip showed him wrestling with several other people.
While the judge was still on the ground, court officers hauled him away, but he managed to escape and attempted to follow her again, as seen on camera. He even traded blows with other participants in the fight.
According to KLAS, an alarm went off for a few minutes warning people about the situation. As per reports, Holthus had sustained a slight head injury but was recovering well. The altercation also caused injuries to a marshal.
Court records state that on April 23, Redden threatened "to bust the kneecaps" of another guy, "resulting in substantial bodily harm."
A separate judge had mandated in May that Redden take a competence exam. Records indicate that before being deemed competent in October, he was admitted to a state behavioural facility.
In November, Redden entered a guilty plea to the charges. After he failed to show up for his court date in December, Judge Holthus issued a warrant for his arrest, according to KLAS.
When Did This Happen?
Following the assault on Wednesday, he is now being charged with two more counts: battery and battery on a protected person, the latter of which alleges that the victim suffered "substantial harm."
He's scheduled to return to court on Thursday at 9:00 a.m., preferably with handcuffs. He is currently in Clark County Jail.
According to court records, Redden previously appeared before Holthus on allegations of malicious destruction of property. In 2021, he was incarcerated for a year after being charged with domestic assault.
