Plane Runs Out Of Fuel After Taxiing Around New York Runway For Six Hours Without Flying Anywhere

In a strange turn of events, a plane, due to travel from Newark to Denver in the US, taxied for so long on a runway that it was forced to refuel.

The Independent reported that the United Airlines flight stayed on the New York runway for more than six hours before returning to the terminal as it didn't have enough fuel for the trip.

The flight, which was to travel to Denver, Colorado, was initially unable to take-off as planned due to poor weather conditions.

Passenger details whole ordeal

One of the passengers on the flight was New York Times reporter Hiroko Tabuchi, who shared her experience of the disastrous flight, which was eventually canceled, on Twitter.

After a lengthy delay, the passengers were told to disembark the plane so that it could be refuelled and boarding could start again, Tabuchi said in a subsequent tweet.

However, once they had deplaned, passengers received an alert on the United app notifying them that the flight had been canceled ¨C but were then told by staff at Newark to reboard.

But after further delays, the flight was finally canceled.

Passengers were reportedly given only a cup of water and a ¡°tiny packet of those Biscoff cookies¡± throughout the eight-and-a-half-hour delay.

Another passenger Sherrie Wallace, who reached LaGuardia airport to reach home to Ohio, told CBS News that her flight never took off. "I'm still here 24 hours later. My flight was delayed once, twice, three times, and then a fourth time ... They then told us the flight was canceled," she said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that the average delay across the national airspace system on Monday was 37 minutes, and 92 percent was due to weather, five percent was due to volume, and only three percent was due to staffing.
