The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) opened two new routes in Pune on March 6. Yet, it has been one particular metro station that has been in the headlines. Why? Well, just because it has a very peculiar name.
'Bhosari' station has caused a lot of confusion among commuters who are demanding it be renamed. Located on the 5-km stretch between Pimpri to Phugewadi, Bhosari station is located in Nashik Phata along with the Pune-Mumbai highway. However, the Bhosari suburb of the industrial city of Pimpri-Chinchwad is located at least 5 kilometres from the Nashik Phata station.
Many commuters have boarded the metro thinking 'Bhosari' station must be close to the Bhosari suburb. Since it isn't the case, it has been causing confusion and loss of time.
A Bhosari resident, Sachin Rangdal, told The Indian Express that the station's name led to his relatives boarding the metro to Bhosari, only for them to realise it has nothing to do with the original suburb.
¡°Our relatives boarded the Metro train at Pimpri. They were told that the Metro train goes to Pimpri. One station later, they got down at station as the fellow commuters told them that Bhosari station had come,¡± he told the outlet.
Commuters and many organisations have already written To MahaMetro asking for the name of Bhosari station to be changed.
MahaMetro has already taken notice of the issue, with its spokesperson saying the organisation was pulling over the change in the name of Bhosari station and the decision could be taken soon.

The Pune Metro project work started in December 2016 and the deadline to end the project was 2021 but the disruption caused by the pandemic delayed the start by more than a year. The Pune Metro project is funded through a bilateral loan from the European Investment Bank to the tune of €600 million and €245 million from AFD (French Development Agency).
MahaMetro has already started work on Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for the extension of the existing Pune Metro network lines. Maha Metro has also started conducting surveys for the planning for Phase 2 Corridor which is expected to be around 82.5 km.
