After suffering a heart stroke in 2008, Kim Jong-il a hawkish dictator and father of Kim Jong-un ordered Kim to get married to her and in the country, it is not possible to refuse the order of a dictator.

Although it is very common around the world for a woman to adopt her husband's name while some rather keep the old one, after marriage, Ri Sol-Ju has a more complicated problem. She had to leave her birth name and adopt a new name after becoming Kim Jong Un's wife. Not only that, her entire past was deliberately hidden. Even her real name and year of birth are still a mystery.
