A day that was supposed to be exciting and thrilling turned into a nightmare for people visiting the Carowinds amusement park in North Carolina, US. Their visit took an unexpected and horrendous turn when the coaster suddenly stopped, and they were left hanging upside down.
The people were belted and had necessary safety gear but hung upside down for nearly 45 minutes while the team was getting the glitch fixed.
A report in Fox 59 claims that the riders got stuck on the Flying Cobra, the coaster that sends people through a 360-degree loop at speeds up to 50mph. The 125-foot tall looping coaster flips riders six times in total.
However, the laughing and hooting turned into helpless screams after the coaster stopped moving altogether and abruptly stopped for close to 45 minutes.
Speaking to Fox59, Brandon Allen said he was excited about his first experience at a theme park on a rollercoaster, but things took an unexpected turn.
Describing his horror, he said, " I personally watched my tears fall from the sky. It was terrifying."
¡°We go to the very top where they're backing you up, and he was doing a countdown. He goes, ¡®We're sorry, we're having some technical difficulties,' and we thought he was joking because of the surprise element or something,¡± he told Fox 59.
Even though they were 'minutes,' they felt like 'hours,' said Allen, saying they were told that the ride would be fixed anywhere between 35 to 45 minutes.
¡°Which may not be major, but it's a big deal when you're just facing the ground completely. Parents were trying to talk to their children, screaming, ¡®It's going to be okay!¡±
Mr. Allen said.
Recalling another incident last month where riders got stuck on the Electro Spin ride, Mr. Allen said, ¡°It's almost like it continues to happen, and that's what is so scary about it."
The Carowinds amusement park released a statement regarding the incident.
In their statement, they said,
¡°On Friday, April 29, Flying Cobras, located in County Fair at Carowinds, had an unexpected ride stoppage on the lift. The park¡¯s maintenance team responded quickly, and at no time were guests in danger. All guests were returned safely to the station and unloaded within 30 minutes. The safety and security of our guests and associates is Carowinds¡¯ top priority.¡±
They claimed that each guest stuck on the coaster was given two fast pass vouchers.
