In A Bid To Conserve Water, A Singapore Brewery Is Recycling Urine And Sewage Waste Into Beer!
Before the waste is turned into NEWater, it goes through stringent tests and several rounds of filtration to ensure it is safe to drink.
Happy hour in Singapore has found its new meaning. Singapore has introduced a line of beers made from Urine. No, this isn't a joke. A brewery in Singapore has taken the message of being environmentally friendly to another level as they have turned urine and sewage into alcoholic beverages.
It doesn't matter if it sounds appealing or not, but in a bid to make alcoholic beverages friendly for the environment, here is what Singapore has done.
Meet Singapore's 'Greenest Beer':
According to a BBC report, it is currently advertised as ¡°the greenest beer,¡± NEWBrew is made out of a liquid recycled from sewage, filtered, and pumped into Singapore's water supply.
Why did Singapore start using urine and sewage to make beer?
Amid a growing worldwide water crisis, Singapore is doing its fair share of work. Since Beer requires a lot of water and 90 percent of the beverage is H20, Singapore has launched the drink to raise awareness about the country¡¯s water scarcity.
What is piss-beer made up of?
NEWBrew is made out of NEWater, recycled from sewage, filtered, and pumped into Singapore's water supply.
Before the waste is turned into NEWater, it goes through stringent tests and several rounds of filtration to ensure it is safe to drink.
The sewage is treated to become ¡°ultra-clean¡± water before it is used to make 95 percent of the tropical blonde ale.
NEWBrew was launched last month by national water agency PUB and local craft beer brewery Brewerkz, along with Singapore International Water Week (SIWW). The clean NEWater does not contaminate the taste of the malt, hops, and yeast strains in the drink.
The water board in Singapore has been treating sewage water for years to make it potable.
Singapore's special craft beer has been described as a ¡°toasted, honey-like aftertaste¡± created while ensuring Singapore's water supply is secure.
According to Singapore's water agency, recycled wastewater can now meet 40 percent of Singapore's water demand -- a figure estimated to rise to 55 percent by 2060.
Is it the first beer in the world made entirely from Waste?
NEWBrew isn¡¯t the first craft beer to be made from recycled water.
Similar drafts have been brewed by people elsewhere.
A report in The Straits Times claims a craft beer company Stone Brewing rolled out Stone Full Circle Pale Ale in 2017, a beer brewed with purified reclaimed water in San Diego.
Earlier, people have tried to create awareness about food wastage using alcoholic drinks.
In October 2021, Crust Group launched a line of artisanal beers made from surplus bread and other ingredients from its restaurant and hotel partners.
The step was taken to raise awareness of food waste. On April 22nd, Restaurant Super Loco Group introduced a "zero to hero" cocktail, made using tropical fruit scraps, in its Loco Earth Month menu to mark Earth Day.
