US High School Student Loses Scholarship After Twerking Video Surfaces On Social Media
A high school student in Louisiana faced consequences after a video of her "twerking" at a homecoming after-party was shared on social media. Her role as student government president was taken away and her chances of getting college scholarships were put at risk.
While social media platforms provide students with many educational resources and information, serving as invaluable tools for learning and career growth, they can also have detrimental effects. These include distractions, cyberbullying, and exposure to inappropriate material, which can negatively impact students.
A high school student in Louisiana faced consequences after a video of her "twerking" at a homecoming after-party was shared on social media.
Her role as student government president was taken away and her chances of getting college scholarships were put at risk.
As reported by The Guardian, Kaylee Timonet, a senior at Walker High School, was captured dancing at a private homecoming afterparty on September 30 while a friend was twerking nearby. This week, the school principal announced the removal of her leadership position and support for scholarship applications.
"They basically told me that I should be ashamed of myself," Timonet told a local news outlet. "That I wasn't basically following God's ideals, which made me cry even more." "I felt like my life was over."
The incident has caused anger and discussions among students, and many have shown their support on social media with "Let the Girl Dance" messages.
I was outraged when I read the story about Kaylee Timonet.

Some parents have drawn parallels between the school's actions and the plot of the 1980s movie Footloose.
According to The New York Post, after the meeting where he reportedly reprimanded her, St Pierre also told the top student that he was canceling her scholarship application. This scholarship is awarded to only two students each year.
"All I was doing was having innocent fun. I was mortified," Timonet said.

Rachel Timonet, Kaylee's mother, met with the principal on Wednesday and was upset that she was not part of the initial meeting involving her underage daughter.
She strongly objected to what she saw as an "unfair" punishment for her teenage daughter.
"They had other people who were on the dance team dancing in that video that nothing happened to. He said she was punished because she is the 'hood ornament' of the school."
Has the principal apologized?
As per the latest reports, Kaylee has been reinstated to the Student Government Association. She will also receive a scholarship endorsement and an apology from her principal.
Principal Jason St. Pierre expressed his apology, stating that he had already apologized to the Timonets.
He hopes that his upcoming meeting with Kaylee's mother will resolve the situation and allow Kaylee to enjoy the rest of her senior year at Walker High School.
St. Pierre confirmed that he will reinstate Kaylee's position in the Student Government Association and her scholarship endorsement.
Furthermore, he acknowledged that during his conversation with Kaylee about the dance party, the topic of religious beliefs came up.
He realized that it is not his responsibility to determine students' or others' religious beliefs; that should be left to the individual's discretion.
