The price can vary slightly depending on a host of reasons but it makes you wonder how street vendors are able to use blocks upon blocks of paneer, as much as 300 grams, for their dishes with the actual dish for one costing between Rs 30 - Rs 50? Right on cue, comes this viral video which shows how 'fake' paneer made of milk powder, palm oil and chuna (lime) ends up in your favourite street food and even high-end restaurants. Here's what you need to know.

Lakshya Yadav and Chetan Yadav often share 'eye-opening' videos on a number of topics on their Instagram page 'multipliy.' In this particular video, we see Lakshya sitting in front of a mike and ripping to shreds the 'fake' paneer that we often enjoy in our street food. The video shows a montage of news clips and other videos taken by bloggers showing how this item is made from scratch using milk powder, palm oil and chuna.
"Agar mein aapko bataun, aap jo dukaan thelo pe daba ke paneer kha rahe ho, woh paneer nahi, tel hai," he asks at the beginning of the video. "Aur yeh paneer chote chote thailo se lekar bade bade restaurants mein serve hota hai."

"Kuch time pehle mein gya tha Delhi ki Tilak Nagar market mein.Waha ek dukaan pe paneer ke pakode tal rahe hai, bhaisaab. Itne mote, mote. Rs 40 ke pakode mein lagbhag 200-300 gram toh paneer hi tha. Aur khane mein, itna tasty." Curious, he claims he then asked the vendor how he manages to use bread, potatoes, masala and paneer, while charging only Rs 40 a plate.
He turned to his 'distributor friends' for answers. They confirmed his worst fears: all paneer you eat outside is fake and made of milk powder, water, palm oil and chuna. And the end product is so good, it can fool the most expert of palates. Worst still, this paneer is even supplied to high-end restaurants, claims Yadav.
How did the internet react?
The video was posted on May 14, and has raked in a whopping 21.7 million views, 386K likes and comments to match. "FSSAI should take strict actions on these paneer making distributors. If govt is not concerned about their citizens health then why are we paying taxes?" was one straightforward question.
"Being a dairy production owner I confirm, Pure buffalo milk with no water and fat additives required for malai paneer production costs for ?80-85 in the market to the buyer which mostly costs ?65-75 to the paneer production according to the location in India. Now one liter of pure buffalo milk can give us at max 200-250 gm of paneer thus costing the production minimum ?300-350 of milk for producing 1kg of malai paneer excluding the other labour and gas charges. How the hell then ppl sell in 250 and buyers believe that the thing is pure??? Plz dont believe that the paneer is pure if it prices below 350-400 as thats the minimum production investment," explained another user.
"Even on the McDonald¡¯s outlet was shut because of this adulterated/ duplicate paneer and cheese usage in India but the news vanished quickly from the internet. Every brand is using this, it¡¯s understandable street food vendors will do it too," wrote a third.
