Explained: Why you don¡¯t see mobile phones in your dreams

You might just remember the last weird dream you had but do you ever remember seeing a mobile phone? Most likely not. But you're not the only one this is happening to. A lot of people have reported not seeing a single mobile phone in their dreams. But what does that mean? Is there some big science behind it? Here's all you need to know.

Medium.com cites research that sampled 16,000 dreams. Reportedly only 3.6% of women and 2.7% of men saw their phones.

Dream researcher Kelly Bulkeley (PhD) postulated that the way some tech like cars and other transport directly affect our physiological body, telephones, computers and videos do not. The former has a more physiological and sensory impact on us but communication tech, not so much. Interestingly, however, this could further change given the advancement of AI and virtual reality devices.

Kelly further explained that however much technology is a part of our waking lives, it hasn't had the same impact on our dreams and imagination. This sounds both surprising and reassuring in a day and age much of everything is infused with some type of tech.

Katie Heaney over at The Cut, spoke to author Alice Robb in 2018 about this, which is when she learnt about the ¡°threat simulation hypothesis¡± of dreaming. Alice started off by explaining the very reason we dream: to iron out our anxieties about waking life in a manner that they are played out (in our minds) yet not acted upon, something that would be "high risk" in real life.

Katie further wrote how dreams are an "evolved defence mechanism" and often involve real fears our ancestors had like hunting, surviving, fighting off a wild animal. People tend not to dream quite as much about reading and writing, which are more recent developments in human history, and more about survival-related things, like fighting, even if that has nothing to do with who you are in real life,¡± Alice said.

While almost everyone dreams about being seen in public naked, having their teeth fall out or falling to the ground from four storeys up, telephones have a long way to go before entering our dreaming minds.

To make matters more confusing, there is evidence to the contrary: cell phones appear in 3.55 per cent of women¡¯s dreams (and 2.69 per cent of men¡¯s), researchers found. So how many more years before we literally start dreaming of tech? Well, time will tell. Till then, regular dreams shall do.
