Australia is setting new records. Western Australian local authorities have approved the construction of a towering timber-clad building that reaches an unprecedented height. Once finished, the building located on Charles Street in South Perth will claim the title of the world's tallest wooden structure.
What will the world's tallest wooden skyscraper be made of?
Last Thursday, the Metro Inner-South Joint Development Assessment Panel in Perth granted approval to Grange Development for the construction of a massive building known as C6. This structure is set to be constructed using a combination of materials, with timber making up 42% of its composition, while the core will be reinforced concrete.
Which Building Holds The Current Title?
The current record-holder for the tallest wooden tower is the Ascent building in Wisconsin, standing at 284 feet with 25 stories. However, this height is less than half of C6's planned 627-foot stature and 50 stories.
C6 also surpasses Sydney's upcoming Atlassian Headquarters, which is projected to reach a height of 599 feet upon its completion in 2026. This means C6 might hold the title of the tallest wooden tower for a few years before Atlassian Headquarters claims it.
However, it is important to note that a completion date has not been fixed for C6.
How Is C6 Similar To The Atlassian Headquarters?
Both C6 and the Atlassian building will utilize a combination of a steel exoskeleton and laminated timber beams, which is being praised as a more environmentally friendly construction method.
Developer Grange¡¯s director, James Dibble, wrote in his proposal for the authorities, ¡°We can¡¯t grow concrete,¡± and referred to C6¡¯s plan as ¡°a new open sourced blueprint that utilizes hybrid construction methodology to offset the carbon within our built environment, which is the single biggest contributor to climate change.¡±
Dibble added, as per CNN, ¡°This is our opportunity to state that we genuinely care about both the housing crisis before us and the climate crisis we are doing very little about as an industry.¡±
The groundbreaking structure will also incorporate other environmentally conscious elements such as a rooftop garden and an urban farm. Additionally, the more than 200 apartment residents will enjoy access to a fleet of 80 fully electric Tesla Model 3s.
