Numbers That Defined Crypto's Record Year Of 2021

2021 has been a historic year for the crypto industry worldwide. From crypto¡¯s market cap hit $3 trillion, NFT fever pushing digital doodles to million-dollar values, El Salvador becoming the first country in the world to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender, many private banks like Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan launching Bitcoin and crypto products, the concept of the metaverse bursting into the mainstream, to the approval of the first US ETF linked to bitcoin, the crypto industry has witnessed a lot of highs and firsts this year.

And when it comes to quantitative terms as well, the year 2021 can broadly be summed up through these numbers/metrics.

That massive number is the total amount of funding cryptocurrency companies have raised from venture capitalists in the year 2021, signalling a number much more than the 10 previous years combined! Additionally, almost all of the 10 largest investment rounds this year which chipped in over $6.3 billion, were the industry¡¯s largest-ever at the time of close.

$12 billion

This is the approximate level of capital raised in 2021 to build the metaverse, which is a virtual reality layer to the internet. According to venture capital data site Crunchbase, more than 700 metaverse-related deals closed this year in fields as diverse as online gaming and augmented reality (AR).

Even in April 2021, Forbes sold the first NFT magazine cover for $333,333, naming it as Masters of the Metaverse. That cover depicted Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, who later went on to raise $400 million to build out their cryptocurrency exchange, and invest in numerous metaverse-related projects.

By raising $90 million in a series C funding round led by Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin's B Capital, India got its first crypto unicorn CoinDCX in August 2021.

For the uninitiated, in the NFT world, the ¡°floor price¡± for NFTs (non-fungible tokens) is exactly what it sounds like: the lowest price to buy that class of assets.

This is the estimated portion of gold¡¯s $11 trillion market cap reached by Bitcoin at the peak of its bull run that occurred on November 10th, 2021. On that particular date, Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $68,721, implying a 120% surge for the year and a nearly $3 trillion market cap. Whereas if we look back three years ago, bitcoin¡¯s total market cap amounted to approximately just 2.8% of gold¡¯s.
