At the recent 2024 POwR.Earth Summit in Paris, Obama minced no words to criticize Silicon Valley magnates, including Bezos, for investmenting in projects aimed at establishing human colonies beyond Earth.
Tech billionaires like Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Space X chief Elon Musk are working aggressively on their ambitious plans to colonize other planets. However, not many are onboard with their vision as they believe that a lot of work needs to be done on planet Earth first!
Recently, former US President Barack Obama and Bezos locked horns in a debate regarding the same.
At the 2024 POwR.Earth Summit in Paris, Obama minced no words to criticize Silicon Valley magnates, including Bezos, for investing in projects aimed at establishing human colonies beyond Earth.
Elon Musk Started His Space Venture With An Investment Of 100 Million Dollars, Bezos Is Speculated To Put Up To 20 Billion Dollars!
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, initiated his foray into the aerospace industry with a significant personal investment of around $100 million. On the other hand, Jeff Bezos is estimated to have invested between $7.5 billion and $20 billion of his personal wealth into his aerospace company, Blue Origin. These substantial investments highlight the immense financial commitment made by both entrepreneurs to advance space exploration and technology.
However, Former POTUS Obama Doesn¡¯t Approve!
Obama voiced his concerns, emphasizing his preference for prioritizing the care of Earth over plans to colonize Mars. He questioned the reasoning behind investing in Martian colonization, citing potential risks to the environment of our own planet.
"When I hear some of the people talk about the plan to colonise Mars because the Earth environment may become so degraded that it becomes unliveable, I look at them like, what are you talking about?" Obama said.
Jeff Bezos Believes That Space Exploration Is Essential As It Will Help In Safeguarding Earth¡¯s Resources
On the other hand, Bezos argues that space exploration presents an opportunity for humanity's ongoing growth while preserving the limited resources of Earth. He pointed out advancements in literacy, reductions in poverty, and decreases in infant mortality as signs of advancement, even though they may come at the cost of Earth's natural environments.
Bezos, a co-founder of Blue Origin, promotes a vision of humanity's future living in vast space stations orbiting Earth, utilizing resources from celestial bodies like asteroids and near-Earth objects. He envisions this approach easing the strain on Earth's resources and fostering human exploration and creativity.
Unlike Musk's Mars-centric approach, Bezos imagines space stations becoming the primary dwelling places for humanity, with Earth transforming into a destination for recreational visits, similar to tourist attractions such as Yellowstone National Park.
