BYD Reveals Supercar To Challenge Lamborghini & Ferrari
BYD's Yangwang U9 is a high-performance, all-electric supercar priced at 1.68 million yuan ($233,450) that will compete with rival brands like Lamborghini and Ferrari.
The company stated during a live-streamed event (on Sunday) in Shanghai that the Yangwang U9 will initially be for the Chinese market. According to the report, the car can reach a top speed of 309.19 km/h and reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.36 seconds.
Tesla Loses World's Biggest EV Seller Title To BYD
In the final quarter of 2023, BYD surpassed Tesla to become the largest EV seller worldwide. Although the company is better known for producing inexpensive electric vehicles, its luxury models are marketed under the Yangwang and Fang Cheng Bao brands, as per Bloomberg report.
The Shenzhen-based behemoth is betting that there is still a market for high-end products that generate higher margins, even in light of the impending price war in China following Lunar New Year.
Later this year, other high-priced EVs under the Yangwang brand are expected to be introduced in China; among them is a luxury sedan that will set you back about one million yuan. Beginning in late November, Yangwang delivered automobiles. It currently only offers one production model, the U8, a high-end sports utility vehicle that retails for 1.1 million yuan. By the end of January, 3,653 units had been delivered by the company.
