Trust Elon Musk to constantly surprise the internet. In a policy update, Musk has now allowed users to share pornographic material on his micro-blogging social media platform X as long as certain rules and conditions aren¡¯t breached.
The main rules revolve around consent, age-appropriate warnings, and non-prominent display of such content.
In its updated policy on "Adult Content" in May 2024, X stated that users are allowed to share adult nudity or sexual behavior that is consensually produced and distributed, as long as it is appropriately labeled and not prominently featured.
Significantly, this update replaces X's previous policies on 'Sensitive Media and Violent Speech.' X said it believes users "should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed".
"Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression. We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality," the policy note said.
How to Label Your Content?
X requests users who frequently post pornographic content to configure their media settings such that all images and videos are displayed behind a content warning, requiring acknowledgment from other users before viewing.
"You can also add a one-time content warning on individual posts. If you continue to fail marking your posts, we will adjust your account settings for you," it said.
What Are The Restrictions That Are Imposed?
X clarified that this freedom to share adult content comes with restrictions for minors and individuals who opt not to view such content.
¡°We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content for children or adult users who choose not to see it. We also prohibit content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviours," it clarified.
Additionally, X emphasized that sharing adult content in prominent locations like profile pictures or banners is prohibited.
Minors and users who haven't provided their birth dates in their profiles won't have the option to view marked content.
"You may begin to see new media content warnings on posts that X has designated as containing Adult Content (instead of a generic sensitive media label). When these new content warnings are available for you to use, please be sure to continue marking your media accordingly," it stated.

What Classifies As 'Adult Content'?
Adult Content is defined as "any consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behaviour that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal", the statement clarified.
The regulations will be equally enforced for content generated by artificial intelligence (AI), including photographic or animated material like cartoons, hentai, or anime.
