PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: How You Can Get Rs 78,000 Subsidy Under PMSGY, Check Benefits, Eligibility, Documents Required And More

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a government initiative aimed at offering free electricity to households in India. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024, the scheme provides a subsidy for households to install solar panels on their rooftops, covering up to 40% of the panel costs. It's expected to benefit around 1 crore households nationwide and is projected to save the government approximately Rs. 75,000 crore annually in electricity expenses.

The scheme is expected to generate approximately 17 lakh direct jobs in various sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, sales, installation, O&M, and other related services. To ensure households can benefit from the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the government has initiated a large-scale awareness campaign since the scheme's launch to inform and encourage interested households to apply.

On Saturday, March 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that over 1 crore households have already registered for the solar rooftop scheme, PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Several states, including Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, have witnessed registrations surpassing 5 lakh each. PM Modi expressed his delight, stating, "Outstanding news! In about a month since it was launched, over 1 crore households have already registered themselves for the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Registrations have been pouring in from all parts of the nation" He urged those who haven't registered yet to do so at the earliest. The rooftop solar programme, announced in the interim Budget on February 1, will be known as PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. With an investment exceeding Rs 75,000 crores, the project aims to provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month to 1 crore households.

This initiative will enable households to lower their electricity costs and earn extra income by selling excess power to DISCOMs. By installing a 3 kW rooftop solar unit, a household consuming up to 300 units a month can save about Rs 15,000 annually. Such households can save approximately Rs 1,800 to Rs 1,875 on their electricity bills by generating their own power. Even after paying the EMI of Rs 610 for the solar unit loan, they can still save around Rs 1,265 per month or about Rs 15,000 annually. For households not taking a loan, the savings will be even higher.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Subsidy structure

Average Monthly Electricity Consumption - 0-150 units

• Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity: 1-2 kW
• Subsidy Support: Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000

Average Monthly Electricity Consumption - 150-300 units

• Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity: 2-3 kW
• Subsidy Support: Rs 60,000 to Rs 78,000

Average Monthly Electricity Consumption - Above 300 units

• Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity: Above 3 kW
• Subsidy Support: Rs 78,000

For households consuming between 0 to 150 units per month, a rooftop solar plant capacity of 1 to 2 kW is recommended, with subsidy support ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000. For those consuming between 150 to 300 units per month, a 2 to 3 kW rooftop solar plant capacity is suggested, with subsidy support ranging from Rs 60,000 to Rs 78,000. For households consuming over 300 units per month, a rooftop solar plant capacity above 3 kW is advised, with a fixed subsidy support of Rs 78,000.

Rs. 18,000 per kW for shared facilities, such as EV charging stations, with a capacity of up to 500 kW (assuming 3 kW per household), including both common facilities and individual rooftop plants installed by residents in the GHS/RWA.

To apply for the scheme, you'll need the following documents:

• Proof of identity.
• Proof of address.
• Recent electricity bill.
• Certificate of ownership for the roof.

Eligibility Criteria:

• The household must be a resident of India.
• The household must own a house with a roof suitable for solar panel installation.
• The household must have a valid electricity connection.
• The household must not have already received any other subsidy for solar panels.

Application Process Online

• Step 1: Visit the official website (https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in/).
• Step 2: Provide the following details for registration:
• Select your State
• Choose your Electricity Distribution Company
• Enter your Electricity Consumer Number
• Input your Mobile Number
• Provide Email
• Follow the directions on the portal.
• Step 3: Log in with your Consumer Number & Mobile Number.
• Step 4: Apply for Rooftop Solar using the form.
• Step 5: Fill out the online application form.
• Step 6: Wait for feasibility approval from DISCOM. Once approved, have the plant installed by any registered vendor in your DISCOM.
• Step-7: After installation, submit plant details and apply for a net meter.
• Step-8: Upon net meter installation and DISCOM inspection, a commissioning certificate will be generated on the portal.
• Step-9: Once you receive the commissioning report, submit your bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal. You'll receive your subsidy in your bank account within 30 days.
