Google's First Landlord
Yes, you read that right. Shortly after Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin incorporated their search engine into a business in 1998, Wojcicki rented the garage of her Menlo Park, California, home to Larry and Sergey for $1,700 a month.
Google co-founders Page and Brin, who were both 25 at that time, continued to refine their search engine in Wojcicki¡¯s garage for five months before moving Google into a more formal office and later persuaded their former landlord Susan to come work for their company, as per The Guardian.
¡°It would be one of the best decisions of my life,¡± Wojcicki wrote in the announcement of her departure.
As per her LinkedIn profile, Susan remained in Google as its SVP of Adwords & AdSense from April 1999 to January 2014. Then she became YouTube's CEO In February 2014, a role the 54-year-old resigned from last week.
Susan Wojcicki To Take Up Advisory Role
Ex-CEO Susan said she would stay with YouTube temporarily to aid in the transition of leadership, and in the longer term has agreed with CEO Sundar Pichai to take an advisory role across Google and Alphabet, offering ¡°counsel and guidance,¡± as per the report.
Wojcicki is the latest in a series of high-profile tech executives to bow out from their posts in recent years, with Jeff Bezos resigning as CEO of Amazon in 2021, Facebook¡¯s Sheryl Sandberg stepping down in 2022 and Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann leaving his position also in 2022. Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal was ousted in October 2022 as part of the company¡¯s acquisition by billionaire Elon Musk.
Upon Susan's resignation, Indian-American Neal Mohan, who was earlier the Chief Product Officer at YouTube, has taken over the CEO's role.
