A 20-year-old woman from Bengaluru recently became a victim of extortion, losing Rs 2.5 crore from her family's savings due to her boyfriend¡¯s manipulation and blackmail.
Her boyfriend, Mohan Kumar, exploited intimate videos of the couple to pressure her into handing over cash, jewellery, luxury watches, and even a high-end car.
The harassment went on for months, with Kumar threatening to release the videos unless his demands were met.
How it all began
Police revealed that the two first became friends during boarding school but reconnected years later and fell in love.
Kumar allegedly promised to marry her, which led to trips together during which he recorded private videos, making sure his face wasn't visible in some of the videos.
Though he assured her they were for personal use, he later used these videos to blackmail her, threatening to share them unless she complied.
Under pressure, the victim withdrew Rs 1.25 crore from her grandmother's account and transferred it to Kumar.
Additionally, she gave Rs 1.32 crore in cash and other valuables as demands escalated. Kumar even transferred money into his father's account multiple times.
The situation came to light when the woman finally approached the police, unable to cope with the continued threats.
Following her complaint, Mohan Kumar was arrested.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayanand confirmed that the crime was well-orchestrated and revealed that Rs 80 lakh of the stolen amount has been recovered so far.
Kumar now faces charges for his actions as investigations into the crime continue.
