Yamaha has been a big name in the two-wheeler industry since forever. But when it comes to those driven on electric motors, Yamaha does not have too much to offer. The company now aims to change that, with the debut of its new electric scooter - Yamaha EC-05.
A result of a partnership with Taiwanese electric scooter company Gogoro, the Yamaha EC-05 appoints a swappable battery model, a defining feature of Gogoro two-wheelers. The design of the EC-05 has been a courtesy of Yamaha, while all of its internal components come from the house of Gogoro, including the drivetrain.
The companies have not revealed all the specifications of the electric scooter for now. What we can expect though is a range of 100 km on a single charge of two battery packs used together, a feature seen in all of the Gogoro two-wheelers. The EC-05 is also anticipated to offer a top speed of near 100 km/h range.

The swappable battery model will undoubtedly increase the use-case scenario of the electric scooter. Users can simply switch the battery packs once one of them is used and charge them later at convenience in their homes or work spaces. Swappable batteries is something that Indian policy makers are toying with and some manufacturers like Sun Mobility are working on. If put into regulation, scooters like the Yamaha EC-05 will become common place.
As of now, Yamaha has mentioned an August timeline for deliveries of the electric scooters. The sale of the EC-05 will first begin in Taiwan, later followed by other markets of Yamaha. The Japanese auto maker is also looking for potential collaborations for the same.
Yamaha also made the headlines recently for its patents on a new electric motorcycle based on the Yamaha R1. As and when the company comes up with the vehicle or decides to go mainstream with new electric scooters in growing markets like India, the company will again be a force to reckon with in the EV space.
