In a plot right out of a top-rated web series, in a gram panchayat in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district, the husband of a newly elected woman, a sarpanch, allegedly took the oath of office instead of his wife.
In an incident that raises many questions, the husband of a newly elected woman, a sarpanch, allegedly took the oath of office instead of his wife in a gram panchayat in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district.
The case led the district authorities to demand a detailed report.
The Gaisabad Panchayat in the Damoh district is involved in the matter. A woman sarpanch from the scheduled class was elected after the three-tier panchayat election, and several women also won elections.?
However, the swearing-in ceremony turned controversial following reports that their husbands had shown up at the time of the oath-taking in place of the women. A program was held in the local panchayat to administer the oath of office and secrecy to the newly elected Sarpanch and other women.
The district administration resolved to find out the facts and take the necessary measures after the allegations gained momentum.
Ajay Srivastava, CEO of Damoh Panchayat, said in a statement issued to the media that this incident appears to be against the law and that strict action will be taken against those involved after an investigation.
"We had received information that some men had taken the oath instead of their elected wives... We have ordered a detailed report on the matter; once the report comes out, the Panchayat secretary will be punished (if guilty)," he said.
