One of the most-awaited real-life-based Netflix shows, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, is finally out today with its six episodes. With Vijay Verman as one of the leads, the series has been the talk of the town for quite some time now because of its inspiration from true historic events that shook India.?
The show is based on the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 814. The flight, which was coming from Nepal's Kathmandu to India's Delhi, was hijacked by terrorists. After the hijacking, the flight was diverted from Delhi's route to Afghanistan's Kandahar, which was under the rule of the Taliban. The flight had over 170 people, including passengers and crew, on board. People were then freed in exchange for three terrorists under India's custody, which included the founder of Jaish-e-Mohammed Masood Azhar.?
The most horrific and long hijack of India's avaition history that led to freeing Masood Azhar is often seen as one of the critical turning points in India's fight against terrorism, as it resulted in Azhar's founding the terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed.?
Now that we look behind and move straight from 1999 to 2019, almost two decades later, India actually, in a way, also took revenge from the Kandahar hijackers by carrying out the Balakot airstrike on Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp in Pakistan.
Though the airstrike was officially a response to the Pulwama attack in which a convoy carrying Indian security personnel was attacked in Jammu and Kashmir, this can also be linked to the long-awaited revenge of the IC 814 hijack, as the strike was on Jaish-e-Mohammed's facility directly connected to then freed Masood Azhar.?
