KWK 8: Ajay Devgn Reveals His Dad Had Turned Into A Gangster After Running Away From Home

When presented with the chance, Ajay Devgn speaks about his father, action director Veeru Devgan. The actor spoke with Karan Johar on Koffee With Karan Season 8 on how his late father moved from being a car washer to becoming a gangster.

How Did Ajay Devgn’s Dad Become A Gangster?

Ajay Devgn was asked by Karan Johar if he believed his father Veeru Devgan had received his due in Bollywood. "Eventually," the actor stated. He continued by telling the story of how, when he was an extremely young boy, his father had run away from home and was discovered by a senior action director at the time.

The actor told how, when he was thirteen, his father fled their old Punjab home. He arrived in Bombay without a train ticket and was even jailed. He could not support himself because he had no job. However, someone came to his aid and asked that he clean his taxi each day if he wished to sleep in it.

“He started from there and eventually became a carpenter,” Ajay divulged. He added, “Then he became one of the gangsters in Sion-Koliwada area. He was a carpenter also and there were gang wars. One day a very senior action director Mr. Ravi Khanna was passing by and there was this street fight going on. So, he stopped the car and called my dad after the fight and asked, ‘What do you do?’ and he said 'I’m a carpenter'. So, he said one very good line, ‘Tu ladta acha hai, come and meet me tomorrow’ and made him a fighter. So that’s where he started from,” said the actor.

For the unversed, Veeru Devgn worked on more than 200 Indian films including Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Kranti, Mr. Natwarlal, Prem Rog, Phool Aur Kaante, Jigar and Ram Teri Ganga Maili.
