Christopher Nolan is the writer and director of the 2023 epic biographical thriller film Oppenheimer. As J. Robert Downey Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission; Florence Pugh plays Oppenheimer's communist lover Jean Tatlock; Emily Blunt plays his wife "Kitty"; and Matt Damon plays Leslie Groves, the commander of the Manhattan Project. Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, and Casey Affleck make up the ensemble supporting cast.
On July 11, 2023, Oppenheimer made its cinematic debut at Le Grand Rex in Paris. On July 21, Universal released the film in theaters across the United States and the United Kingdom. Due to its simultaneous release with Warner Bros.' Barbie, it became popular to watch both movies as a double feature, a phenomenon known as the Barbenheimer phenomenon. With over $950 million in global receipts and positive reviews, the movie made over $950 million, making it the third highest grossing film of 2023, the highest grossing biographical picture, the highest grossing World War II picture, and the second highest grossing R-rated picture.
