Prasar Bharati OTT Platform: India is all set to get its own home-grown and state-owned streaming station. Indian public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is all set to launch its OTT platform on November 20 at the inaugural ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Sanjay Jaju, the secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MI&B) announced the same on November 13.
Jaju was speaking at an India Game Developer Conference (IGDC) in Hyderabad where he revealed that nearly 60 channels available on Doordarshan (DD) Free Dish will be available to stream. "60 channels available on DD Free Dish will be on the OTT platform henceforth. Most of the archival material will be brought to the viewers through this OTT platform," he quoted.
Having catered to some of the premium archival material of publication, photo division, Doordarshan shows and All India Radio (AIR), the digital distribution service will be largely free but some certain content requires subscription. The ministry plans to create it as a revenue-sharing model and the Intellectual property rights would continue to be with the content creators.
For those who don¡¯t know, back in August, Prasar Bharati issued bids for Application-in-Application integration of OTT, gaming, educational or other applications on a ¡®revenue share model¡¯. The tender notice regarding the onboarding of linear satellite channels for the OTT platform underlined that only those channels that are permitted or licensed by the ministry for downlinking or distribution are eligible to apply.
The preparation to push all material Prasar Bharati has is underway for the November 20 launch and the ministry continues to be in talks with several private content providers for generating titles that could cater to a larger audience base.
