Thudarum OTT Release: Mohanlal and Shobana are all set to star together in a Malayalam film which is eyeing a mid-2025 release. The thriller was earlier rumoured to be a Sankranthi release but has now been pushed indefinitely. However, its OTT rights have been already locked. Thudarum will be streaming on Disney+ Hotstar after its theatrical run concludes, as reported by OTT Play.
The makers previously hinted the delay was because its OTT rights weren¡¯t sold. However, this doesn¡¯t seem to be true, according to people involved with the film. K Suresh Kumar of the Kerala Producers¡¯ Association, had mentioned in an interview that the movie's OTT rights were bought by a big streaming platform, but the release had to be postponed to avoid breaking the contract.
But a source close to OTT Play now says the film's OTT rights were actually sold to Disney+ Hotstar earlier in January, even before the movie was supposed to hit theatres. A team member explained that the deal they got for the movie was not as good as expected for a Mohanlal film. There were two main reasons for this.
First, Disney+ Hotstar wasn¡¯t too eager to release a Malayalam film during the last part of the year, especially with the switch to JioHotstar happening. Second, Mohanlal¡¯s Barroz, which was released in theatres in December 2024, didn¡¯t get the response they were hoping for. The source also mentioned that the Thudarum team is now in talks with other streaming platforms, hoping for a better deal than what Hotstar offered.
Directed by Tharun Moorthy, who wrote the screenplay with K. R. Sunil, Thudarum is produced by M. Renjith under Rejaputhra Visual Media.
