Story of former ISRO scientist?Nambi Narayanan caught people's fancy when it was released last year. R Madhavan's directorial debut that starred him in the lead role kickstarted a conversation about the Indian aerospace scientist all over again.
The aerospace scientist who worked for ISRO contributed significantly to the Indian space program by developing the Vikas rocket engine.?He used to lead the team that acquired technology from the French for the Vikas engine used in the first Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) that India had launched. At ISRO, he was in charge of the cryogenics division.?
Commenting on the success of Chandrayaan 3 mission, he said, "Every failure of Chandrayaan 2 was addressed to. Let it be a satellite problem, stability problem or an additional requirement problem. All were addressed to and all were rectified. And the?failure of Chandrayaan 2 was used for the success of Chandrayaan-3. Or we can say we used that failure in our favour. In that way, they (ISRO scientists) have clearly done a wonderful job. We were?confident before the launch itself that it (Chandrayaan 3) would be a success. And so it turned out to be. Congratulations to all."
As a movie about a talented aerospace engineerNambi Narayanan, who was leading ISRO's cryogenic engine project, was made, discussions on his life, struggles and achievements were expected. However, no one would have imagined that after the release of a marvellous movie like?Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, which is also?R Madhavan's directorial debut, people would be discussing Narayanan's religion.?
The 80-year-old man who is still awaiting justice?has responded to criticism over him being shown as a Hindu in the movie. He asserts he is a Hindu by religion and asks if he should be ashamed of it. "Is it a sin to be a Hindu?" he asks in a video doing the rounds on social media.
Most people, even on social media, believe that Nambi Narayanan was a Brahmin. Responding to that, he said that even if he was a Brahmin why would people cut him off.?
"I am not a Brahmin, that is a different question. Is it a sin? If there is a Brahmin fellow, you will just cut him short. There are so many Brahmins, who have given their lives for this country. Not just one. I can give you a list. So the point I am making is we are unnecessarily coloring the issue," he says.

For the unversed, Nambi Narayanan was a reputed rocket scientist whose life turned upside down after he was accused of being a spy and transferring drawings and documents of rocket engines to Pakistan through two Maldivian women, Mariam Rasheeda and Fauziyya Hassan -- who were too accused of being spies.?
After years of investigation and interrogation in which Narayanan had to face humiliation and physical aggression, it was revealed he was falsely fabricated in the case.Nambi said he was framed as part of the US-backed conspiracy to destroy India's development of the cryogenic engine.
In 2012, he was?awarded?a compensation of Rs 10 lakh by state government. In?2018, he was paid Rs 50 lakh as compensation for harassment and mental cruelty. Last year, he was awarded?Rs 1.3 crores by a sub-court in Kerala for damages for his illegal arrest and harassment. Nambi had to fight several cases in the court to get the compensation. However, he is still awaiting justice against those who falsely accused him of being a spy.?The Supreme Court had ordered a probe against?Kerala police for the same.
