The teaser for Maa Kaali starring Rimi Sen, is out. The film is supposed to be inspired by the partition of Bengal, telling the harrowing story of 'the great Calcutta killing' or 'the Direct Action Day' that resulted in India's split. In addition to Raima Sen, the period drama stars IAS officer turned actor Abhishek Singh.
The Great Calcutta Killing, also known as The Direct Action Day, occurred on August 16, 1946, when the All-India Muslim League decided to take 'direct action' in order to secure a separate homeland for Muslims in the country following the British leave from India. It resulted in a statewide sectarian riot, followed by bloodshed between Muslims and Hindus in Calcutta (now Kolkata), the Bengal region of British India. The four-day violence, dubbed the Week of Long Knives, claimed 10,000 lives and left 15,000 others seriously injured.
Maa Kali is heavily based on the story of the Calcutta Killing and Noakhali murders, which had long-term harsh political ramifications. The novel sheds light on Bengal's forgotten history and reveals how Bengali Hindus experienced atrocities on the verge of independence, leaving a terrifying mark even after nearly eight decades.

Director of Maa Kali, Vijay Yelakanti, discussed the storyline in an interview and said, "Although it is directly related to one of the most significant chapters of our modern Indian history, Direct Action Day continues to be an untold story of human suffering."
Maa Kali is a trilingual film produced by TG Vishwa Prasad. It will be released in Hindi, Bengali, and Telugu. The teaser begins with "Let the Truth be Heard, LOUD and CLEAR."
