While everyone was expecting fireworks at the box office, Siddarth Anand's Fighter couldn't recreate the magic of War and Pathaan. The film opened tobox office collection of Rs 24.60 crores. Answering why the film got a lukewarm opening, the director gave a couple of reasons that didn't go down well with fans.?
As per Anand, the film's release on a weekday (Thursday) might have affected the film's connection. He also felt that people couldn't strike a chord with the film as it dealt with subjects like flights and jets.?
"Our expectations as makers have become a little unrealistic. I am talking about myself also, having delivered Pathaan just one year ago. We need to keep our expectations in check and align them with the product. Also, it was a working day. Thursday is considered mid-week. For instance, we held a special screening for friends and family on Thursday, and whoever we texted and asked, at least 40% of them asked, ĄŽIs the show in the evening?Ą¯ So, that time, it hit us how will people bunk work or bunk school and come in the morning," he was quoted as saying by Galatta Plus.
"Another thing is the genre. Fighter is a huge leap for a filmmaker. It's a space that is unexplored and absolutely new. It has no reference point for the audience. They are like, ĄŽWhat are these planes doing?Ą¯. There is a huge percentage of our country, I would say, 90 percent, who have not flown in planes, who have not been to an airport, so how would they know what's happening in the movie? This is my dissection. They felt this was a little alien. They didnĄ¯t understand what kind of exhilaration they are supposed to feel in the air action, so there is a certain initial disconnect. But once you enter the theatre, you realise this is such a basic film," he added.?
"Well 100% of our population(or atleast what I'm assuming) haven't met an alien but Koi mil gaya was super success," a fan took a dig at his statement.?
Another one added, "Sounds legit! Most population hasn't been on a cruise also God knows how they understood Titanic when it released in India and made it a success".
"Harry Potter was a blockbuster cause 90% of people studied in Hogwarts", said a user.
"100% of our population hasn't lived in a kingdom still Baahubali storm happened", wrote another one.
Another user opined, "Audience couldn't understand Mughal-e-Azam because they didn't grow up under Akbar's rule. This is why no one appreciated it too."
