Amar Singh Chamkila, the renowned Punjabi folk singer's story, has resurfaced following the release of a Netflix film by Imtiaz Ali. Amar Singh Chamkila and his second wife, Amarjot, also a singer, were tragically murdered in Mehsampur, Punjab, just before they were set to perform. More than three decades after their deaths, their lives are still drawing significant attention.?In a revealing interview with BBC Hindi, Jaswant Kaur, Amarjot's elder sister, discussed some previously unknown details about Amarjot's marriage to Chamkila.?
Jaswant Kaur revealed, "He told us he was unmarried. My father had two conditions for the marriage: the groom must be a singer and must be unmarried. They eventually got married. After Amarjot and Chamkila's son was born, we discovered that he had been previously married."
Kaur said that she also voiced her frustration with the ongoing lack of justice for the couple's murder. stating, "It has been 36 years, and still, there has been no justice; no investigation has even begun. We demand that those responsible be caught and punished."
"We lost our loved ones, and those responsible need to face consequences," she added.

Meanwhile, in another interview, Gurmail Kaur, Chamkila's first wife, expressed her sorrow. She shared the moment she learned of Chamkila's tragic death. Gurmail also recalled the last time she saw Chamkila, which was just a day before he was fatally shot. "We met him a day before his death. It was raining heavily at the time," she remembered.
Gurmail Kaur, while sharing a memory from her last encounter with Chamkila, said, "Amarjot and I were in the kitchen, and we watched him get drenched in the rain. I felt his face was different; I thought it had turned black. I looked at his face at different intervals, and his face continued to look black,¡± she explained. ¡°When I saw his mortal remains, it was the same black face that I was seeing the last time I saw him," she painfully recounted.
The release of the Netflix film has clearly reopened old wounds and brought back memories of the beloved singer and the unsolved mystery surrounding his and his wife's deaths.
