As soon as it was announced that Diljit Dosanjh will be essaying the role of Jaswant Singh Khalra in his biopic, a lot of feathers were apparently ruffled.?
Now, a report suggests that several people staged protests where the shooting of Jaswant Singh Khalra biopic is going on as they feel that Diljit Dosanjh should not play his role.?
Why do they not want Diljit Dosanjh as Jaswant Singh Khalra?
Diljit Dosanjh has requested protestors and told them that he will play Jaswant Singh Khalra with utmost faith and they should let him shoot, but they said that he is videshi and is westernised and that don't want him to play the role.?
The statement reads, "In last couple of years multiple people had approached us for making a movie on life and work of Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra but most groups wanted to do crowd funding to produce the movie which we do not want to be part of. So Khalra Family decided to give the permissions for this project to Mr. Honey Trehan and team in which Daljeet Dosanjh is playing the role. Khalra Mission Organization is not involved in this project and family's association to this project is to review the script and provide inputs. We will also review the final movie once complete for the final go/no-go.?
"We are aware of concerns within the community that Bollywood has in past misrepresented Sikh Sangrah movement and we also do share the same concerns. We will try our best to provide feedback to the film production team and keep the narrative on the right track."
Jaswant Singh Khalra was a human rights activist?who after the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, researched and created a list of Sikh men who went missing as the police at that time were reportedly accused of killing unarmed suspects in staged shootouts and detaining suspects for any reason.?
He was investigating four major cases at the same time that included the custodial killing of Behla, human-shield case concerning the death of seven civilians, cremation of 25,000 unidentified bodies in Punjab and that the police had killed about 2,000 policemen not collaborating in counter-terror operations. Later,?Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concluded that Police had cremated 2,097 people in Taran Taran district alone.??
Jaswant Singh Khalra was last seen outside his house washing his car in 1995 before he went missing. Witnesses claimed that the Police took him away, but the latter denied the same.?In 1996, CBI found evidence that he was held at a police station in Tarn Taran. The agency recommended the prosecution of nine Punjab police officials for murder and kidnapping. However, the accused weren't charged for ten years.?
On 18 November 2005, six Punjab police officials were convicted and sentenced to seven years imprisonment for Khalra's abduction and murder.?
