Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar is one of the most loved celebrities across India. Not just because of his impeccable art but also because of his vibrant views on secularism. You must surely remember the time when he went to Pakistan and slammed them in their face and came back with pride.
Javed recently attended the Deepotsav programme organised by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray and was heard saying, ¡°There are some people who have always been intolerant. Hindus are not like that. Their speciality is that they are generous and large-hearted.¡±
¡°Don't finish that, else you will become like others...This is Hindu culture, this is civilization. It has taught us democratic attitudes. That's why there is democracy in this country¡ We have learnt from Hindus' way of living. Will you leave that? There are many deities, but when we talk about the ideal husband and ideal wife, Ram and Sita come to mind.¡±
Further in his address, Javed also talked about the decline of freedom of expression in India. Mentioning the movie ¡®Sholay¡¯ Akhtar expressed, "If the film were made today, there would be a huge controversy over the dialogues of Hema Malini and Dharmendra in the temple." Interestingly, Sholay¡¯s screenwriter Salim Khan was present at the event when Javed said this.
Noted screenwriter Salim Khan and actor-filmmaker Riteish Deshmukh were seated beside Akhtar when he made the remarks.
He later clarified his remark by publishing an editorial in Shiv Sena¡¯s Saamna, ¡°Recently I had said in an interview that Hindus are the most decent and tolerant majority in the whole world. I have also said many times that India can never become Afghanistan because Indians are naturally not fundamentalists. Being moderate and taking a balanced stand is in the DNA.¡±
¡°I see a lot of similarities between the Taliban mindset and the right-wing ideology. This has angered people but the reality is that there are truly many similarities. The Taliban are forming an Islamic government, the Hindu right wing wants a Hindu Rashtra. The Taliban want to curb women¡¯s rights, the Hindu right-wing has also made it clear that they don¡¯t like the freedom of women and girls.¡±
