Hollywood might have Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe but Bollywood has Rohit Shetty who has created the Cop-verse or Cop Universe.
In this smartly designed world, Shetty¡¯s movies are high on action and loaded with patriotism and love for the country and those who serve the matrabhoomi.
Before Singham, Simmba and Sooryavanshi became household names, Rohit Shetty made way into our hearts with his comedy series Golmaal. Interestingly, this wasn¡¯t his directorial debut. For the unversed, his first movie was called Zameen which opened to lukewarm reviews and vanished away into oblivion soon after. It was with Golmaal that Shetty grabbed eyeballs. What¡¯s more, even his association with Ajay Devgn, who he calls a brother, was welcomed by fans and critics alike.
Together, this duo went on to create some of the biggest hit movies in the history of cinema. From 2006 till 2011, we were served with multiple installments of Golmaal. While the entertainment slowly started diminishing, Rohit Shetty implemented Plan B that he had thought of much in advance.
This movie revolved around police officer Singham who is a messiah for the poor and a clever official who could take all the goons around him for a ride. He would go beyond his duties to help the needy and thus, earned a reputation of a savior of the distressed lot. In his signature style, Rohit made cars fly and also showcased Devgn as an unbeatable man who is capable of tackling a huge crowd of thugs single-handedly. Initially, many dismissed it as an over-the-top masala entertainer with fiery dialogues and logically-challenged stunts.
However, masses took a liking to it as it dealt with the social evil of corruption and an honest cop fighting against odds to bring justice to those who were wronged. Its massy quality won hearts and Rohit Shetty got the confidence of making a sequel.
Thankfully, Rohit parellely kept churning out decent comic capers which kept the curiosity around the sequel in full power. Viewers enjoyed Chennai Express and Bol Bachchan while anticipating the return of their beloved cop Singham.
This solidified Shetty¡¯s dream of making a cop universe of his own. Another four years went by, during which, Rohit kept dabbling with comedy and drama. Another cop was born with Simmba played by Ranveer Singh. He played a corrupt police officer who is forced by circumstances to go down the path of righteousness after life-altering instances around him.
He took it up a notch when he decided to connect the new cop with the old. Shetty brought back Singham in the form of a call back and eventually hinted at a crossover. If you caught a screening you¡¯d remember the whistles and loud hooting when Singham made his entry at a crucial moment to extend help to fellow officer Simmba.
?At present, Rohit Shetty is working on Singham 3 and aspires to recreate the same furore that the first one created. The thing that works in his favour is his timing. Instead of milking the success, the Dilwale director is a firm believer of taking his own sweet gap so that he can give his best.
Rohit Shetty recently made it to the headlines when he announced yet another product from the cop universe. Only this time, he is turning towards the small yet highly impactful medium ie OTT platforms. Starring a new cop in the form of Sidharth Malhotra, he is all set to enthrall the audience with an eight part series. As per the official statement, Rohit Shetty¡¯s first ever digital venture will be a homage to? the selfless service and unwavering commitment of police forces.
?When asked about the same in an interview, he said, ¡°Indian Police Force is a very special one for me and I¡¯ve been working on it for years. I¡¯m delighted to be collaborating with Amazon Prime Video to breathe life into this story which will transcend geographies and linguistic barriers, providing me an opportunity to showcase the same to audiences worldwide. I am super excited to be working with the amazingly talented Siddharth Malhotra in this series. I have always strived to push the envelope of action-first entertainment and with this series, I am confident we will create a new benchmark.¡±
There¡¯s no second thoughts about how this series, just like the movies, will have a lot of takers. Siddharth Malhotra has had a tumultuous career graph which peaked when Shershaah was released. It would be interesting to see him turn into a super cop performing high octane stunts and becoming a massy hero with Indian Police Force. And if Shetty manages to squeeze in cameos of Singham, Simmba or Sooryavanshi, the excitement will be tenfold.
