Veteran actor Anupam Kher has been appointed as the new chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), located in Pune. He has succeeded Gajendra Chauhan, whose two-year stint as chairperson ended in March 2017, which was followed by a 139-day strike by students.

It was a controversial tenure for Chauhan as the students had protested against what they felt was a "politically-motivated appointment" of a candidate.
