'Nationalist' Actor Anupam Kher Appointed As The New FTII's Chairman

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has been appointed as the new chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), located in Pune. He has succeeded Gajendra Chauhan, whose two-year stint as chairperson ended in March 2017, which was followed by a 139-day strike by students.

It was a controversial tenure for Chauhan as the students had protested against what they felt was a "politically-motivated appointment" of a candidate.

Students also declared him "ill-qualified" to head the premier institute.

Anupam Kher, who has more than 500 films to his credits has also been associated with several theatre circles. Kher has also acted in some of the most acclaimed international films such as the 2002 Golden Globe-nominated Bend It Like Beckham, Ang Lee's Lust, Caution, and the 2013 Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook.

Anupam Kher was also appointed as the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama. He received? Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.
