Noted economist and chairman of PM Modi's Economic Advisory Council, Bibek Debroy, passed away on Friday at the age of 69.?Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Debroy, calling him "a towering scholar."
?Former CEO of NITI Aayog Amitabh Kant?recalled him as "one of India's brightest minds".
Born in Shillong on 25 January 1955 into a Bengali family, Debroy studied at Kolkata¡¯s Presidency College and the Delhi School of Economics. Debroy also attended the University of Cambridge.
He served as the Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) since September 2017.
He had worked in Presidency College, Kolkata, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi, and also as the Director of a Ministry of Finance/UNDP project on legal reforms.He was also a Member of NITI Aayog up to June 5, 2019.
A Padma Shri awardee, Mr Debroy earlier served as the chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in Pune.
A prolific writer, Debroy translated the unabridged versions of the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad Gita, the Harivamsa, the Vedas, and Valmiki's Ramayana into English.
Along with Manmatha Nath Dutt, he is only the second person to have translated both the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, in unabridged form, into English.
