With the economy being one of the key focus areas in the ongoing U.S. presidential elections, the two leading candidates have laid out their policies to be implemented if they are elected in November. This is especially tough for Kamala Harris, as the Democratic candidate is part of the current administration, and announcing sweeping changes to its policies would be seen as an admission that the Joe Biden-era policies have failed.
Helping Harris walk this tightrope is an Indian-American who is serving as an advisor to the Harris-Walz campaign. Bharat Ramamurti, who recently joined the Harris campaign, is said to be the one shaping its liberal economic policies.
A close confidant of Biden, Ramamurti served as deputy director at the Biden White House National Economic Council. until December 2023. He was also a member of the COVID-19 Congressional Oversight Commission. Previously, he had also served as an assistant to Senator Elizabeth Warren.
Before joining the Biden administration, Ramamurti was the managing director of the corporate power program at the progressive Roosevelt Institute, which focuses on shifting power away from large companies.
Like Harris's mother, Shyamala Gopalan, Ramamurti's father, Ravi Ramamurti, also hailed from Tamil Nadu. Bharat Ramamurti comes from a family of legal experts, and his father and twin siblings have doctorates in law from Harvard, like him.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Ramamurti defended the tax proposal introduced by President Biden and recently endorsed by Harris, which many argued was 'unconstitutional', arguing that it would provide more opportunity for Americans.
"I think that this reaction to unrealized gains is a little funny, given that I bet the majority of people watching right now are already paying a tax on unrealized gains. It¡¯s called a property tax," Ramamurti had said.
